In the World: Chappaquiddick

Friday, July 18, 1969

U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy drove his car off of a bridge on Chappaquiddick, a small island off of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. The car overturned in the water and although Seantor Kennedy escaped, the other occupant of the car, Mary Jo Kopechne, died. Controversy surrounded the incident as Senator Kennedy did not initally report the accident.
