In the World: “The Prince” Fails in Triple Crown Bid

Saturday, June 7, 1969

Majestic Prince, winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, was not supposed to race in the final leg of horse racing’s triple crown, the Belmont Stakes, due to a minor leg injury.  After intense media and public pressure, the horse’s owner relents and races him despite his injury.  He finishes second, five and a half lengths behind winner Arts and Letters, the same horse that finished second in the previous two races.   Majestic Prince would never race again.
