Looking Back: Andy Garlichs (’69) and the Greek Life

Gamma Delta Xi v. Alpha Sigma Delta at Dowling

IFC Game

Andy Garlichs graduated from Dowling College in 1969 with a B.A. in political science and went on to a career with U.S. Customs. In these excerpts taken from a longer oral history, we hear for the first time about Greek life at Dowling. Andy was a member of Gamma Delta Xi (in fact he was president in 1969).

He tells us about the brothers he remembers, the beer blasts, the dangerous trips to the Commack Arena to see the Long Island Ducks play hockey.  He also clues us in to the major intrafraternity games between Gamma Delta Xi and Alpha Sigma Delta. Did Gamma always win, as he claims? Let us know.

We’ve got a slide show of yearbook photos tracking Gamma Delta Xi from 1965 through 1972.  By 1974, there’s no more mention of the fraternities on campus.

  1. Interesting site. Curious, how did you get in touch with Andy? I would like to get in touch too. Can you help me out?

    • Hey Dave how are you doing. Great to hear a name from our old pledge class. hope all is going well.

  2. Great interview. I was a fraternity brother of Andy’s and he has great recall of the history and the times back in the late 60’s and the college activities that took place.

  3. There were no greater brothers, and we never lost the interfraternity football game.
    All the best,
    Moe
