The 23rd annual Tony Awards were given out at the Mark Helinger Theatre.

Among the winners were:

  • Best Play: The Great White Hope
  • Best Musical: 1776
  • Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play: James Earl Jones for The Great White Hope
  • Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play: Julie Harris for Forty Carats
  • Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical: Jerry Orbach for Promises, Promises
  • Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical: Angela Lansbury for Dear World
  • Best Play: The Great White Hope
  • Best Musical: 1776
  • Best Choreography: Joe Layton for George M!
