In the News: Malverne Student Protests

Monday, March 17, 1969

Students marched through the halls of Malverne High School in Nassau County. The group, placed at 300 according to that day’s New York Times, was protesting the lack of black teachers and guidance counselors at the school and also demanding new courses in black history and literature as well as student representation on the school board.By the end of the day, 137 students were arrested.

The turmoil began the week before, with a sit-in on Thursday and a walk-out of students on Friday.
