In the World: The Population of Long Island

Tuesday, March 11, 1969

The Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO) released its annual survey estimating the populations of Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The numbers, based on US Census figures and installed electric meters, were:

Nassau: 1,455,609 (up .86% from the year before)

Suffolk: 1,059,322 (up 4.5% from the year before)

According to the Long Island Power Authority’s (LIPA) 2007 Population Survey (the latest available):

Nassau: 1,354,534 (up .2%)

Suffolk: 1,504,947 (up .6%)
