Dowling Sports: Men’s Basketball Goes International

Tuesday, March 4, 1969

The Dowling Men’s Basketball Team participates in an exhibition game vs. the Wantagh Pacers, an Amateur Athletic Union Team, played under international rules.  While Dowling is overmatched in all aspects of the game, losing 102-66, the experiment tests how a college game would be affected by certain rule changes such as those used at the Olympic level.  The game is played with no backcourt violations, a 30-second shot clock, and different foul rules limiting free throws to speed up the game.

The game is played at the Long Island Arena in Commack in front of 145 fans paying $2 per seat.  It was also filmed and the tape sent to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) for potential consideration of future rule changes.
