In the World: “Mariner 6” Launches

Monday, February 24, 1969

As part of a dual mission to Mars, Mariner 6 begins its long flight, expecting to reach the red planet in late summer. Its objective is largely to photograph the surface and study the atmosphere of Mars to help plan future Mars missions. Mariner 6 made its pass around the equatorial region of the planet, Mariner 7 would launch later in March and fly over the southern polar region.
