In the World: John Steinbeck Dies

Friday, December 20, 1968

Author John Steinbeck died in New York City at the age of sixty-six. Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962, Steinbeck is known for portraying the struggles  of Depression-era farmers and itinerant workers in such books as The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men.

Most closely associated with the California of his birth, Steinbeck eventually settled in New York and spent most of his summers in Sag Harbor on eastern Long Island.
