An NFL game in Oakland saw the New York Jets leading the Oakland Raiders by a score of 32-29 with 65 seconds remaining. As the clock struck 7:00 PM, NBC made the decision to switch to their scheduled movie, a new made-for-TV version of the children’s story “Heidi”. No one outside the West Coast saw Oakland’s comeback, scoring 14 points to win the game 43-32. NBC eventually had to issue a public apology and the incident significantly boosted the national profile of professional football.
