In the World: New Ratings System for Movies

Friday, November 1, 1968

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) introduced a voluntary rating system for movies that included four categories:

  • General Audiences (G)
  • Mature Audiences (M)
  • Restricted/children under 16 not permitted unless accompanied by an adult (R)
  • No one under 17  (X)
